Misbahuddin Farid visits Chalia, Kotri after media reports that industrial waste material being disposed of in Kenjhar lake

Karachi, January 16, 2013 (PPI-OT): Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Misbahuddin Farid visited Chalia and Kotri on emergency basis after publication of reports in the media that Industrial Waste material being disposed of in Kenjhar Lake. D.M.D Ali Mohammad Palejo, Chief Engineer Bulk, Superintendent Engineer, concerned officers and Journalists were also present on this occasion.

M.D KW and SB spoke to Commissioner Hyderabad who had assured him that the Industrial Waste is not being disposed in the Lake anymore and it has been stopped. However, during the visit it was observed that the waste water is still being disposed in the lake.

M.D KW and SB informed Governor Sindh and Chief Secretary Sindh regarding the situation on the phone from the site. He expressed his distress over the ignorance of concerned departments on this important issue which can put millions of lives in danger.

He said that despite many reminders during past 10 years Departments of Irrigation, Environment and Industries have failed to take necessary actions in order to stop the waste water of Kotari Industrial Area to reach the water supply to Karachi.

This is a severe threat to more than 20 million citizens of Karachi. He said that immediate actions must be taken to stop the waste water to reach the K.B Feeder. It is a vital necessity for the citizens of Karachi since 70% of the water supplied to Karachi comes from Kenjhar Lake.

In this regard, M.D KW and SB informed Secretary Irrigation, Secretary Environment, Secretary Industries and Commissioner Hyderabad about this very serious issue through a letter on Tuesday. He requested that immediate actions must be taken to resolve the issue, short term and long term policies must be formulated since the waste poses a threat not only to human life but to the marine life as well.

Eight months ago similar requests to Secretary Irrigation and Secretary Environment were made, requesting measure to stop Industrial Waste from Noriabad and Kotri to reach Kenjhar Lake. However, despite many reminders over the years no action has been taken yet.

M.D KW and SB has directed Chief Engineer Bulk and Chief Chemist to collect samples from Kenjhar Lake to inspect and ensure that citizens of Karachi are supplied with clean and healthy drinking water.
