Minister for Science and Technology visits Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources

Islamabad, July 11, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mr. Zahid Hamid, accompanied by Mr. Akhlaq Ahmed Tarrar, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology visited Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) today.

The Minister was extremely pleased about the tangible and productive work carried out by the Council. He said that the National Water Quality Laboratory of the PCRWR has the state of the art facilities, which must be utilized to the maximum extent.

“The baseline data generated by the assessment survey of water supply schemes of the country and water quality data generated by the water quality monitoring of urban and rural areas of the country would provide guidelines in the area of drinking water quality management to the local governments, public health engineering departments and general public” he added.

He highly appreciated the .research and development work carried out by PCRWR in the field of rainwater harvesting and desertification control in Cholistan desert and said that must be replicated in the deserts of Sindh and Balochistan.

“The groundwater recharge activity carried out by PCRWR through leaky dams construction in Pashin Lora Basin of Balochistan may also be propagated in other areas of the country through provincial governments.

The water quality testing and treatment technologies developed by PCRWR (i.e. Water Disinfection Tablets, Safe Water Filer and Arsenic Removal Sachet etc.) must be commercialized on larger scale to benefit the common man with the public private partnership” He further added. The Federal Minister also assured the highest level of cooperation and support of Ministry to the Council in this regard.

Earlier a detailed presentation was given by Dr. Muhammad Aslam Tahir, Chairman PCRWR on research and development activities of PCRWR pertaining to; water quality, water management, rainwater harvesting, groundwater Investigations and products and services offered by PCRWR for the masses of the country. The role played by the Council in addressing various issues of water resources was also highlighted.

The Minister also paid visit to National Water Quality Laboratory, GIS Centre, Commercialization Cell and National Capacity Building Institute Project site of the Council.
