Islamabad: Today is the 33rd death anniversary of Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto. April 4 is marked as a black day in the history of the country when dictator General Zia-ul-Haq hanged the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Pakistan and tried to extinguish a blazing candle of democracy. This day, democracy was murdered in the country. History will always condemn the anti-democratic forces on their conduct.
This day reminds us of exemplary courage, self-respect and steadfastness of the Quaid-e-Awam with which he made the ultimate sacrifice of his life for restoration of people’s rights and upholding of democratic principles. Human history will continue to eulogize the matchless services and sacrifice of a leader who refused to surrender before a dictator. The inspiring personality of the Quaid-e-Awam and the principles he stood for will continue to serve as a beacon of light for the oppressed people in their fight against exploitation, oppression, tyranny and suppression of fundamental rights.
Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto was blessed with many qualities of head and heart. He was an embodiment of such higher values as honesty, tolerance, courage and democratic principles. He was a statesman, politician of the highest order and a great advocate of the participatory values. The Quaid-e-Awam wanted to implement such an economic order in the society based on principle of equality where all sections of society have unhindered access to national resources. He was particularly dedicated to empowerment of the less privileged sections of society. He awakened political consciousness, self-respect and self-confidence among the people. He believed that the people were the real repository of power. Political awareness that exists today owes itself largely to Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto’s leadership.
The Quaid-e-Awam not only presided over an ideological revolution in the country but was also instrumental in creating awareness among the masses of the Third World countries including the Muslim world inspiring people to take on the exploitative forces. Through his relentless struggle, he became a symbol of democracy for the Third World. His martyrdom deprived the people of Pakistan as well as that of entire world of a leader par excellence.
Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto is not merely name of a personality but represents a movement, an ideology and a mission. He has become a metaphor of democracy. His philosophy of equality and brotherhood can serve as a beacon of light for the world in general and Third World in particular.
The movement for restoration of people’s rights and democracy initiated by Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto was carried forward by his illustrious daughter Shaheed Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto. She bravely fought against the enemies of democracy. The way Shaheed Mohtrama held PPP together and represented people’s aspirations accounts for return of democracy in the country. On this day, we pay a glowing tribute to the services of Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto.
We believe that democracy is the best system of government, which determines the way forward for national progress and prosperity in accordance with people’s aspirations and also delineates broad parameters for their attainment. The present democratic government continues to pursue the policy of reconciliation and continuity of democratic process. We are making relentless efforts to bring about social and economic revolution in accordance with the vision of our leaders.
The government has introduced historic initiatives for supremacy of Parliament, media freedom and strengthening of all democratic institutions, which will not only lead to attainment of cherished goal of a welfare society but also promote a culture of democracy, harmony, tolerance and reconciliation. Pakistan will certainly emerge as a peaceful, civilized and moderate country in the world as a result of these actions.
Whereas today is an occasion to recount the contributions of Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto and pay a rich tribute to his leadership, we should also renew our pledge to work even harder for establishment of an egalitarian society based on principles of democracy and equality as envisioned by the Quaid-e-Awam.
Let us reiterate our commitment to keep serving the masses by acting upon the principles laid down by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and make Pakistan a truly prosperous and developed nation.
