Lahore: Punjab University College of Art and Design (PUCAD) organized a memorial reference for Mrs. Anwar Afzal, Ex-Chairperson of Department of Fine Arts and one of the pioneer faculty member, in the Anna Molka Gallery of the College. Mrs Afzal breathed her last in the last week of December 2011.
College Principal Prof Dr Rahat Naveed Masud, faculty members and family members of Mrs Afzal, her two sons Mobeen Afzal and Imran Afzal, were also present on the occasion.
Prominent artists, art critics, intellectuals and art-historians shared their thoughts while few of Mrs Afzal’s students shared their memories of a sweet and affectionate teacher. Dr Ajaz Anwar, Mrs. Ana Moka Ahmad’s daughters Mrs. Zara David and Tahira Ayaz also shared their memories.
Moreover, Mrs. Shahnaz Malhi, Dr Shaukat Mahmood, Javed Iqbal, Mrs. Zahra Aslam, Shahnawaz Zaidi, Mrs. Jamila Zaidi and Mrs. Sabiha Haider also spoke at the occasion. A presentation covering life and works of Mrs Anwar Afzal was exhibited while Nadeem Alam read a paper in this context.
Mrs Afzal, who was born in 1923 and studied art at the Fine Arts Department from 1941 to 1944 and joined Lady Maclagan Training College Lahore as Lecturer in 1945. Later in 1947, she was appointed as Lecturer at the Fine Arts Department where along with Anna Molka Ahmad, she nurtured the first ever generation of Pakistani Artists.
Mrs Naela Amir conducted the program. At the end, fateha Khuwani was offered for the diseased mentor.
