Islamabad, March 13, 2014 (PPI-OT): An important meeting on the enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights held at IPO-HQs, Islamabad on 5th March, 2014 under the chairmanship of Mr. Aamir Hasan Director General IPO-Pakistan. Senior executives from Ministry of Commerce, Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan i.e. Police, FIA, FBR, Pakistan Customs, PEMRA and representatives of business Community participated in the meeting. Purpose of the meeting was to address complaints received from stakeholders for infringement of their IP rights.
Stakeholders presented their cases of IPR Infringement, Mr. Saadullah and Ejaz Ahmed from Atlas Honda Ltd. informed that design and trademark of their new product “Honda CD Dream” is registered with IPO-Pakistan.
They are facing problems of massive infringement of their designs in the market. Mr. Zeeshan Choudhry from EMI informed that copyrights of the Song “Keh Dena Ankhon Sey” by Alamgir are owned by EMI this song is being used in Lipton Tea Campaign by Bulls Eye Advertising (Pvt) Ltd. without authorization. Mr. Khalid Khan, CEO, Digital World presented report of violation of their copyrights.
He said that their copyrighted contents have been pirated by Converge Technologies. Mr. Abtar Ali Khan and Mr. Murtaza Saeed from Rockville Technologies informed that their company has exclusive mobile rights for the contents to be exploited in Pakistan, contents for Asia Cup and ICC T-20 Cricket Series. Evamp and Sanga has exploited music labels without permission and without legal authority from Rockville Technologies while Mr. Anwar Khan from Evamp and Sanga informed that they are running live audio streaming service under PEMRA Mobile Audio service License over the various Mobile Network Operators in Pakistan.
Mr. Aamir Hasan DG IPO-Pakistan advised both the parties to mutually resolve their issues within two weeks time. Mr. Umer Sheikh, from EMI proposed that Telecom Companies (Telecos) should be advised to share revenues with copyright holders of music and other content being used by their customers.
Mr. Aamir Hasan Director General IPO-Pakistan took serious notice of IP rights infringements. He advised representatives of IPR Enforcement agencies to look into the matters proactively and address issues of genuine right holders under intimation to IPO-Pakistan. He said that Pakistan is already on Priority Watch List of USA which may lead to trade sanctions on Pakistan from business partners.
The issue of IPR Enforcement will also be discussed with US authorities in the upcoming Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council meeting. Officials from FIA, Police, Pakistan Customs and PEMRA assured compliance for effective enforcement of IP rights under laid down laws.
