Meeting of National Assembly’s body on Water and Power held

Islamabad, November 25, 2013 (PPI-OT): A meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Water and Power was held on 25-11-2013 at 2:00 pm in Committee Room No. 2, Parliament House, Islamabad, under the Chairmanship of Mr. Muhammad Arshad Khan Laghari, MNA.

It was attended by MNAs Syed Ayaz Ali Shah Sherazi, Malik Ihtebar Khan, Lt. Col.(Retd) Ghulam Rasool Sahi, Rana Afzaal Hussain, Pir Muhammad Aslam Bodla, Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Nawab Muhammad Yousaf Talpur, Dr. Mahreen Razaque Bhutto, Mr. Junaid Akbar, Syed Waseem Hussain, Moulana Muhammad Gohar Shah, Syed Kazim Ali Shah, Mr. Abdul Rahim Khan Mandokhail, Syed Ghazi Gulab Jamal and Sahibzada Muhammad Yaqub and other officers from the Ministry of Water and Power and its attached departments. The agenda of the meeting was as under:-

A comprehensive briefing by the Ministry of Water and Power and its attached Departments. The Standing Committee was briefed about the achievements and initiatives of the Government with regards to power sector.

The Committee was told that the circular debt of Rs. 480 billion has almost been cleared. Power policy 2013 by CCI has been approved and the Task Forces on theft of electricity have been asked to curb this menace. The work on stuck up projects has been reactivated. The Prime Minister has also been visiting friendly countries to attract FDI in water and power sectors.

The Pakistan Power Park at Gaddani has been started for addition of affordable coal based power and the Government is also taking immediate steps for the import of electricity from neighbouring countries. The problems of water and power sector are addressed as short term, medium term and long term goals. The end result of these goals will be an output of 30,000 MW within a span of 15 years.

The Standing Committee asked the Secretary Ministry of Water and Power to direct different DISCOs to stop over billing with immediate effect and the Chief Engineers of DISCOs must attend the calls from the members and pay heed to them. The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks to and from the Chair.
