Meeting held to resolve Average Grain Length issue for rice export to Iraq

Karachi, May 23, 2017 (PPI-OT):A meeting was held by the Charge D’Affaire for Pakistan Mr Shaikh Mazhar Shami, Director General TDAP Syed Rafeo Bashir Shah and REAP Chairman Mr. Mahmoud Baqi Moulvi with Mr. Walid Mosavi, Under Secretary Ministry of Trade Iraq.

The meeting was held in order to discuss the issue of Average Grain Length (AGL) for Rice being procured by the Iraqi Government, being set at a higher AGL than the size of the Rice grain from Pakistan. This was seen by the Pakistani exporters of Rice, as a hinderance to the exports from Pakistan as due to this conditionality, exports of Rice from Pakistan to the Iraqi Public sector procurement agencies had almost become minimal.

After detailed discussions, the Iraqi Under Secretary of Trade very kindly agreed to the point of view of the Government of Pakistan and REAP and stated that the issue of the AGL would be resolved and the AGL for Pakistani Rice would be acceptable as there was no major difference between the Grain Board of Iraq’s stipulated 6.6mm AGL for Rice and the Pakistani basmati Rice AGL of 6.2-6.3mm. He also stated that all tenders which are available on the website of the Ministry of Trade Itraq, would be especially sent to the Pakistani Embassy at Baghdad for onwards circulation to the Pakistani Rice Exporters.
