Maritime Vision 2025 Discussed

Karachi, 27 May: Pakistan’s Maritime Vision 2025 was discussed at the Maritime Discourse held at Bahria University today. Ex Director General Ports and Shipping, Captain Anwar Shah spoke on the topic. Mr. Aga Jan Akhter, Chairman Port Qasim Authority; Director General Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Rear Admiral Athar Mukhtar SI(M); Rector Bahria University, Vice Admiral (R) Shahid Iqbal HI(M); Director General National Centre for Maritime Policy Research, Vice Admiral (R) Asaf Humayun HI(M); Mr. Mahmood Akhter Cheema Country Head IUCN and other dignitaries from maritime sector attended the event.

Captain Shah emphasized that maritime sector can only flourish with professional and institutional strengthening of government departments, which deal with maritime matters. Maritime administration is a field, which requires experts to implement best practices, ensure co-ordination among all national actors and stakeholders. Similarly, the maritime experts need to draw National Maritime Development Programme, inducing public-private partnership mode of investment as well as green field projects.”

He further said Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and some countries have devised focus groups giving vision 2025. Similarly, Bahria University can play the role of a Think Tank and invite experts from all fields of maritime arena to develop the Maritime Vision 2025 for Pakistan.

Rector Bahria University also shed light on the importance of education and training of personnel in maritime sector of Pakistan. He added, “There is no denying that education is an essential preparation for life and work in an advanced economy. Modern economies require skilled and motivated workers, who can only profit from the available opportunities if they are equipped to respond to the specific demands.” He promised the stakeholders, full support from Bahria University in promotion of the maritime field.

“Maritime Discourse” is a series of lectures, launched by National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR), a constituent unit of Bahria University. The Centre’s mandate includes promotion of maritime education, research and public awareness on the issues related to maritime sector.

The Discourse was followed by award distribution ceremony of Post Graduate Diploma (Logistics & Port Management) programme, offered at Bahria University Karachi Campus.  The diploma was launched in the year 2012 to fulfil the needs of trained manpower in the maritime industry of Pakistan.
