Malik asks India to fulfil Nehru’s pledge with Kashmiris

Srinagar, January 22, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, has called upon New Delhi to fulfil the promise made by its first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, with the Kashmiris at Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

The JKLF Chairman addressing a gathering at Basant Bagh in Srinagar reminded New Delhi of Nehru’s speech delivered at Lal Chowk wherein he had said, “Kashmiris are not a commodity who can be sold or bought. If they choose to remain independent, I will accept the reality, thought it would hurt me.”

Yasin Malik said that India should immediately give the Kashmiris the right promised by its leader. “India would celebrate its Republic Day on January 26 as the world’s largest democracy but it has failed to give democratic rights to the people of Kashmir,” he deplored.

The JKLF Chairman appealed to the Kashmiri people to observe complete shutdown on January 26 to convey to India that they would never forget the sacrifices rendered by their martyrs for a sacred cause.

Yasin Malik said that every town, every locality in the occupied territory had witnessed massacres. “With the result, graveyards are full of martyrs,” he said. He said that on January 21, 1990, over 50 people were killed when Indian troops opened fire on a peaceful procession. “We will not allow the mission of martyrs to die. We have taken a pledge to take their cause to its logical conclusion,” he maintained.

He said that JKLF had already announced 48-hour hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against the life-sentences awarded to several Kashmiri youth. “We will not hesitate to go on an indefinite fast if life sentences slapped on the youth continue to remain in place,” he warned. Speaking on the occasion, liberation leader, Javed Ahmed Mir, said that the mission of martyrs would be accomplished at all costs.
