Lahore, October 04, 2012 (PPI-OT): Lahore Stock Exchange held its fifth session of SECP Investor Education Program for the students of Hailey College of Banking and Finance, University of the Punjab, Lahore. The seminar was attended by a huge number of MBA students. High officials from Lahore Stock Exchange (LSE) also participated in the session.
Head of Investor Relations Department, Mr. Nadeem Asghar addressed the participants and briefed them about the rights and responsibilities of the general investor. While highlighting the rights and responsibilities of the investors, he explained how an investor can lodge complaint with the Exchange in case he/she is not satisfied with the services of the broker. Ms. Hifsa Siddiqi also briefed the participants that a prudent investor chooses an investment product not only according to his goals and the amount of capital available but also according to the risk appetite.
She elaborated the pros and cons of investing in different financial products. She focused on the broad features of investments opportunities available in the country, Pakistan’s economic and financial system, features and characteristics of different financial markets, regulatory framework, market indicators, investment products, financial services and roles and responsibilities of various financial institutions in the country.
She also focused on the need for setting up CDC and various facilities being offered by CDC not only to add efficiency but also for increased transparency and investor’s confidence. She explained as to how investors can use various CDC services for protecting their portfolios. She also elaborated the basics of investments with pros and cons of investing in different financial products.
She also explained the fact that how diversification across various investment instruments safeguards the investors interest. The Investors were also given an insight about the features of insurance, mutual funds, commodities, debt and equity markets. The facilities provided by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), for the investors were also discussed in detailed.
At the end of the session, a detailed questions answer session was conducted. Students asked several questions from the Officials of Lahore Stock Exchange which were then answered by them in detail. The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and Institute of Capital Market (ICM) along with financial market stakeholders (KSE, LSE, ISE, NCCPL, CDC, MUFAP, PMEX, IAP) have developed a countrywide `Investor Education and Awareness Program’ launched from July 13, 2012. As part of this program, it was the second session conducted by the Lahore Stock Exchange for the general investors.
The basic purpose of the program is the promotion of investors understanding of risk and reduced vulnerability to fraudulent schemes. Expanding outreach of financial products and services and encouraging short term as well as long term saving culture is also an important component of the program.
However, the basic objective of the program is to build investor confidence in the non-banking financial markets which includes stock exchanges, commodity market, insurance, mutual funds etc. The investor education is widely recognized as being crucial for sustainable growth of the financial markets, ensuring investor protection and bolstering confidence in the markets
