Kuwait plays key role in supporting development: FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) affirmed the priority to cooperate with Kuwait for its role in supporting development in the region.

The remarks were made by newly-elected FAO Director General Qu Dongyu late on Tuesday, during his meeting with Kuwait’s representative at the Organization’s General Conference Ali Al-Farsi and permanent representative to FAO Yousif Hujail.

During the meeting, Al-Farsi, who is also the deputy director general of the Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAF), extended the congratulations of Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Dongyu on his election to the position. He noted that it is very important that the new director general represents Asia, as the continent depends largely on agriculture and food production to support the economy.

Al-Farsi hoped FAO would provide job opportunities for Kuwaiti youth to engage in international and regional work. He also called on Dongyu to look into issues facing fish resources in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as being the main source of food in the Gulf region.

On his part, Dongyu stressed the importance of cooperation to move into a diverse economy with different income sources. He added that Kuwait has a great experience in the field, expecting the country to become an international financial center in the next decades.

Meanwhile, the Director General hailed the strong Chinese-Kuwaiti ties on all levels, noting that Kuwait plays a vital role in supporting FAO through generous donations. He hoped Kuwait would create a connection between Asia and the Arab world, affirming the Gulf state’s role in improving living conditions for different countries in the region.
