Kunar Pasakhi Gas Field Workers Call Off Strike

Islamabad: After successful negotiations with Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, the third party employees working on OGDCL’s Kunar Pasakhi Gas field in Hyderabad called off their strike and resumed work.

On the orders of Dr. Asim Hussain Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Mr. Hamid Asghar Khan Joint Secretary (Admn) Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources held talks with the protesting workers at Kunar Pasakhi Gas field at Hyderabad. Minister Fisheries Government of Sindh Mr. Zahid Ali Burghari, who is the local MPA, Deputy Commissioner, SSP Hyderabad were also present during the negotiations.

The negotiations lasted for more than ten hours, in which the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources agreed to announce welfare package for the workers including provision of insurance against accidents for third party employees working at the field. Construction of a 20 bed hospital, separate vocational training institutes both for men and women and provision of sports equipment to the local school were also announced at Kunar Pasakhi.

Rupees One Hundred Thousand compensation package for one of the injured worker and employment for the brother of one of the deceased workers was also announced. In order to improve security situation in the locality, establishment of two police posts and provision of one patrolling vehicle was also agreed. Moreover, two water filtration plants would be installed in the area and a school bus for students and one van for transporting workers would also be provided.

Mr. Hamid Asghar Khan Joint Secretary (Admn) also informed the workers that Minister Petroleum would personally visit the Kunar Pasakhi Gas field to distribute certificates among workers. On the complaint of protesting workers, it was decided that the contract of third party hiring contractor would be terminated after 31st January, 2012. A survey for provision of gas to the five villages (Qasbas) in the one and a half kilometre radius around Kunar Pasakhi Gas field has also been commissioned.

It may be recalled that the workers employed on third party contract started their protest on 12th January, 2012 at Kunar Pasakhi Gas field and held OGDCL’s Executive Director (Production), General Manager (Admn), Regional Coordinator and Field Manager in captivity at the gas field. Previous negotiations with the local politicians and district administration failed.
