Srinagar, April 21, 2016 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the students of Kashmir University held a signature campaign to protest the detention of the Handwara girl by the police. Students said the signature campaign was meant to show solidarity with the detained girl. “It is unfortunate that a juvenile has been detained for so long without any authority,” the protestors said. On the occasion, a large number of students participated in the signature campaign.
Meanwhile, the students threatened to hold protests if the girl was not released at the earliest. Students and human rights activists staged protests to seek release of Handwara girl from illegal detention. The protestors assembled at the Press Enclave to press the authorities for her release. The protesters were carrying placards seeking end to impunity to armed forces in Kashmir.
“No law authorizes the authorities to keep the victim girl and her family in illegal detention. The manner in which the video was recorded and subsequently circulated is a gross violation of the special protections afforded to minors particularly during investigation of sexual assault cases. The actions of the police and the army would necessarily invite criminal prosecution if investigated,” they said.
