Karachi: The prosperity of Kashmir is linked with the prosperity of Pakistan as a strong, viable and independent country. This was stated by Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan, President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, during a visit to the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry Head Office on Thursday, November 24, 2011, where he met Mr. Khalid Tawab, Vice President-FPCCI and other leading members of the business community of Pakistan.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Tawab welcomed Sardar Yaqoob at Federation House, and thanked him for taking out the time to meet members of the business community. He recalled Sardar Yaqoob’s longstanding affiliation with Karachi and the business community, and recounted some of his notable achievements. Mr. Tawab stressed that AJK is as much a part of Pakistan as any of the provinces, and expressed the wish for AJK to share in the economic prosperity of Pakistan.
While assuring Sardar Yaqoob of the business community’s unflinching support for the Kashmir cause, he hoped that the accordance of MFN status to India would improve our trade relations with India, which might help to resolve our political differences. Mr. Tawab also mentioned the upcoming International Investment Conference being organized by FPCCI in Islamabad on December 9-11, 2011, and urged Sardar Yaqoob to chair a session on investment opportunities in AJK. Mr. Waseem Vohra, Chairman of the FPCCI Standing Committee on Foreign Investment, gave a brief presentation about the Conference.
While thanking the business community for their generous display of hospitality, Sardar Yaqoob stated that their wish to see Kashmir as an equal partner to the prosperity of the rest of the country was highly appreciable. While providing details about projects initiated during his tenure in the fields of education and hydro-energy, he stressed the need to work hard to surpass the challenges facing the entire country.
He said that the people of Kashmir welcomed the Government’s decision to accord MFN status to India, but the business community must ensure that they are able to survive the onslaught of Indian competition by focusing on quality and competitiveness. While responding to a question, he stated that the opportunities to invest in AJK were immense, and he invited the business community to visit AJK to explore the possibility of industry and investment at very attractive terms, including uninterrupted supply of energy.
He also expressed his willingness to attend the FPCCI International Investment Conference, and thanked the business community for highlighting the due importance of AJK in the country’s investment plans.
Also present on the occasion were Mian Zahid Hussain, Shiekh Shakil Ahmed Dhingra, Mr. Haroon Rashid, Mr. Ubaidullah Qadri, Mr. Majeed Aziz and Mr. S.M. Farhad.
