Karachi, October 09, 2012 (PPI-OT): In order to provide 100 million gallons daily (MGD) additional water supply to the residents of Karachi, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) would establish a new water pumping house at Dhabeji on the directives of Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan.

This was stated by KWSB Managing Director (MD) Misbahuddin Farid while on an emergency visit to the Dhabeji Pumping Station on Monday.

“The KWSB is working vigorously to ensure swift provision of water supply to the citizens and this new pump would provide 100 million gallon additional water daily”, said the chief of the water utility.

It was informed on the occasion that water supply is maintained from the Dhabeji Pumping Station through 22 pumping sets, whereas, Phase-I pumps are running on diesel and gas.

The pumping station was established in 1961 and most of the machinery here has been working since that time. These machines require heavy repairs on a frequent basis, requiring heavy repair and maintenance funds.

The chief of KWSB said on the occasion that provision of clean drinking water to the citizens of Karachi was his first priority and for this purpose, the maintenance staff at Dhabeji should pay special attention on the machinery working at the plant. The Dhabeji Pumping Station is the world’s largest pumping network and 550 million gallons of water was supplied to the city daily through this pumping station.

Project Director Ijaz ul Hassan Kazmi said on the occasion that the new pump house would be launched soon and it would cost around Rs1.2 billion. This project would ensure 100 million gallon additional water supply to the citizens of Karachi.

The MD of KWSB has directed the water board’s officers concerned to ensure that the power generators are always available on a stand-by basis, and the machinery is given due attention so that the water supply is not disrupted in any case. He personally checked the efficiency of the pumps installed at the pumping station and also directed the staff not to neglect their vital duties.
