Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to induct 2 Veterinary Experts in Zoo Doctors Committee

Karachi, January 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): KMC Chief Officer Matanat Ali Khan said two doctors from Live Stock Department of Government of Sindh will be inducted to the Veterinary Doctors Committee established by KMC for ensuring better sanitation and timely treatment for the captives in Karachi Zoo, Landhi Korangi Zoo and Safari Park.

He was chairing a review meeting on Karachi Zoo which was attended by Senior Director Sports, Culture and Recreation Muhammad Rehan Khan, Director Zoo Bashir Saddozai, Dr. Kazim Dr. Azam, Dr. Aamir and other officers.

Chief Officer said various laboratory tests were conducted few days ago to ascertain the reason behind the death of deer in Karachi Zoo and it had been emerged that the deer were suffered with a seasonal viral infection which affects mostly the animals feed with green plants besides sanitation condition and water also caused this disease.

He said curative drugs and vaccination had been provided to animals without delay and the feed and water were being tested in laboratory to take more measures in the light of the reports. Chief Officer said it was transpired in the privately conducted tests that the animals were affected with various bacteria which normally attack them during cold weather and the viral infection had also affected many of the animals in the suburban areas of Karachi.

He said the blood specimen of affected deer were also sent to the Central Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory of Government of Sindh whereas it has been decided also to check the animal’s feed, water and drugs on weekly basis.

He said measures will be taken for improvement in Karachi Zoo and all such factors responsible for animal’s death will also be taken into consideration. The captives were being given medicines and the zoo staff had been instructed to ensure better care of the animals.

He said anti-viral spray was also started in Karachi Zoo and in Landhi Korangi Zoo to eradicate any chances of spread of germs. The blood specimens were sent to PCSIR and their results were expected to be available soon.
