Islamabad, July 07, 2014 (PPI-OT): Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui said KMC was carrying out channelization of drains with its own limited resources. The work has been started with the channelization of Nehr-e-Khayam which would complete soon and this would besides improving water flow also make its cleaning easy.
He expressed these views on an inspection of the channelization work of Nehr-e-Khayam on Monday along with the director general engineering Niaz Ahmed Soomro. Administrator Karachi directed concerned officials to speed up work of cleaning and channelization of Nehr-e-Khayam and complete it before the start of next monsoon rains.
He said the drainage of rain water depends on the clearance of all hurdles in the flow of drains and removal of encroachments on its edges as the presence of encroachments alongside these drains created trouble for their cleaning with the help of machinery, still KMC was trying to solve these problems with its own limited resources.
The Director General Engineering Niaz Ahmed Soomro while giving a briefing to the Administrator on this occasion said the channelization work of Nehr-e-Khayam was being carried out on about one kilometer area and a service road and wall on both sides was also constructed from Clifton underpass to Benazir Park.
He said Nehr-e-Khayam was the source of drainage of rain water from various surrounding areas including Clifton, Civil Lines and Cantt. Station. Due to absence of channelization this drain was filled with the garbage and mud which caused difficulty in its cleaning. After the channelization work completes, water flow in the drain would improve and the adjoining area would be saved from staying of rain water during monsoon.
