Amman (OIC-UNA) Jordanian Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi said that Jordan’s stance on Jerusalem was not an instantaneous act but a continuous situation led by King Abdullah II, who spares no effort to support the holy city and the Jerusalemites in their steadfastness.

Speaking to Jordan TV’s “60 Minutes” show, the minister said that King Abdullah is the custodian of the Islamic and Christian holy site in Jerusalem, and he has made effective actions at all levels to contain the repercussions of the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move Jordan rejects and considers a violation of international law.

“We work in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the Arab and Islamic countries to set out an international position against changing the Arab identity of Jerusalem, and preventing attempts to establish new facts on the ground,” said the minister.

As for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution rejecting the U.S. government’s unilateral decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and move the American embassy to the holy city, Safadi said UNGA resolutions are not binding but ” We are talking about a political act.”

The United States, he said, vetoed a resolution supported by 14 other U.N. Security Council members, a move was expected as the U.S. itself took the decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem despite opposition from the great majority of world countries, Petra reported.

Safadi also reiterated Jordan’s stance which calls to meet the right of the Palestinian people in establishing their independent Palestinian state on the 4th June 1967 borders.
