Japan agrees funding public welfare projects in Karachi

Karachi: Administrator KMC Muhammad Hussain Syed has said that JICA and Japanese Government had shown readiness for providing financial assistance for the improvement of infrastructure in Karachi and to launch new projects. In the initial stage funds for phase-II and III of the construction of Mehran Highway were issued.

He expressed these views on a meeting with a Japanese delegation called on him in his office. The delegation lead by Mr. Nagase said Japan Government will provide funds for projects initiating in Karachi for improvement of city’s infrastructure and for the progress and development of Karachi.

Representative of Japan Government Mr. Oveda, KMC Consultant Nadeem Ansari and other officers were also present on this occasion.

Administrator Karachi said PC-I of the projects that were planned to start in the next financial year had been sent to Government of Pakistan through the Sindh Government. The delegation asked the Administrator to identify the amount to be spent on these projects so that these could be arranged by Japan Government.

Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said he had started holding meetings with the departmental heads in this connection and the list of new projects will be sent to JICA and Japan Government once it got finally compiled.

He said we are trying to compile the development requirements in such a manner that the projects of public welfare and basic necessities were on top of every other thing. Seven Japanese experts would be visiting Karachi in the current week who would submit the report to Japan Government after conducting the survey of projects required in Karachi so that work on them could start immediately.

He said the Japanese delegation had expressed interest in the projects of Mass Transit, Karachi Circular Railway, Rapid Bus Transit System, Flyovers, Underpasses, Malir Expressway, land management and I.T.

Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed informed the delegation about the existence of another agreement between the Japan Government and KMC for financial assistance in the infrastructure development and other projects of Karachi. He thanked the Japan Government for providing cooperation in the progress and development of Karachi.
