Srinagar, August 14, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, Indian police and troops have intensified the harassment of people across the Kashmir Valley in the name of so-called security ahead of the Indian Independence Day to be observed tomorrow (Thursday). Bakhshi Stadium, the main venue of the Independence Day function in Srinagar, has been sealed by a large contingent of police and CRPF personnel.
Sharp shooters have been deployed on high rise buildings particularly around the stadium while police is monitoring the movement of people through Closed Circuit TV Cameras. Policemen in civvies have also been deployed. Barricades have been erected at entrance points of Srinagar, where the vehicles coming from other districts are being frisked thoroughly.
Police are carrying out regular searches of the houses around the stadium and vehicles plying in the area are also being checked thoroughly. Iqbal Park, located adjacent the Stadium, has also been closed for visitors and will be thrown open on August 16.
Similar arrangements have been made at district headquarters where the functions are scheduled to take place. Meanwhile, the police and troops have intensified frisking in Srinagar and other major towns of the occupied territory.
Bikers plying in Srinagar areas, especially in areas close to Bakhshi Stadium, are constantly stopped by cops and asked to show the relevant documents including licenses and registration certificates. Identity cards of drivers are also being checked.
The student and business community, and office-goers are the most affected. “I reached the university late because of frisking outside the Nigeen Police Station,” a student of the Kashmir University told media men.
