International Women Day celebrated by Sindh Government

Karachi, March 09, 2015 (PPI-OT): International Women Day, 2015 celebrated by Directorate of Women Development, Govt. of Sindh. The event was chaired by Mr. Muhammad Hanif Merchawala, Additional Secretary, Women Development Department, Govt. of Sindh. In the participants there were the staffs of Directorate of Women Development, Karachi. Representatives from NGOs, civil society and women from different sphere of life attended the Program.

The main purpose of this program on the eve of International Women DAY, 2015 is to recognize the struggle and achievements of the women and also appreciate the role of women in the society.

Program started with recitation of surah from the Holy Quran by Ms. Urooj Javed and after that Ms. Tehmina Rehman, Incharge/Psychologist, Women Complaint Cell, Karachi in her welcome note, welcomed all the distinguished guests and further she shed lights on the overall outstanding achievements of women of Islamic world and especially from sub-continent and Pakistan. She also described all the efforts of Women Development Department and directorate since its inception to till date.

Ms. Anjum Wasi, representative from NGO and Ex Councillor was invited to highlight the issues hardships faced by women out side home and workplace. She also given examples of the Holy wives of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and specially Hazrat Bibi Khatija (R.A) who was a business woman. She emphasized that women and men both are must for each other, so both have to contribute equally to the society or at home.

After that Ms. Urooj Javed, Acting Manager, SBBCW, Karachi delivered her speech regarding the efforts of the Directorate of Women Development about women and so far programmes/events arranged by Women Development. In her view there must be Gender balance in the society. The department empowers women in distress by giving them free legal assistance and counselling.

Ms. Zaib, Legal Officer, SBBCW, Karachi described about the working of SBB Centre for Women. She said that Women centres are working to stop violence and abuse against women and providing free legal aid to poor women to resolve their problems and be aware of their legal rights.

Mr. Muhammad Hanif Merchawala, Additional Secretary, Women Development Department, Govt. of Sindh, welcomed and thanked all the participants to attend the program. In his speech, he said that Women Development Department is working for the empowerment of women.

The women force hold more than 50% of our population, hence their role in national growth is vital. Women Development Department has initiated several projects to bring about the changes for legal, political, economic and culture empowerment of women. He highlighted all the efforts of Women Development Department, to get passed all the Acts so far, such as:

Protection against Harassment of Woman at Workplace Act, 2010

Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2014

Provincial Home based women workers Policy. (Draft has submitted to Honourable Chief Minister, Sindh)

In the end Mr Tariq Waheed Baloch, District Women Development Officer, Directorate of Women Development, Karachi last gave vote of thanks to all the participants.
