Islamabad, August 10, 2015 (PPI-OT):
Government should prefer interests of masses supreme in the upcoming auto policy while discouraging manufacturers exploiting masses, a business leader demanded Monday. Pakistan’s automobile industry has been selling low quality cars to masses on inflated rates which must not continue, said Patron Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders Shahid Rasheed Butt.
He said that local manufacturers have been receiving incentives while their output is unsatisfactory as far as the quality, safety, consumption, expansion, technology up gradation and price of vehicles is concerned. The quality of locally manufactured cars has gone down to an extent that some models of second-hand imported cars are costly in the market as compare to the new models of same cars being manufactured locally, said Shahid Rasheed Butt.
He said that government should not ban import of used cars as it will end competition and hurt millions of people directly or indirectly associated with this business. Many leading automakers of EU had tried to introduce their products and establish manufacturing facilities which were frustrated by local cartel with the help of government officials, he informed.
Blocking the introduction of EU made cars ended incentive to local assemblers to improve quality. Butt asked the government to provide incentives to European and American carmakers to establish manufacturing facilities in Pakistan which would help local companies to focus on quality and reduce prices.
