Peshawar, August 25, 2013 (PPI-OT): Explaining salient features of the recently promulgated Right to Information Ordinance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Secretary Information and PR, Azmat Hanif Orakzai said here Saturday that it is a giant leap forward in real empowerment of the general masses and now it was up to the mass media to educate them on it.
Addressing a seminar organized by a local NGO in a hotel in Islamabad Saturday he said that on the Ordinance has empowered to access the maximum possible information regarding the working of any provincial government organization while on the other hand a fully independent Information Commission has been envisaged in it very well in accordance with the Spirit of Article 19-A, whereby the right to information has been explicitly and emphatically declared as part of the fundamental rights.
It was in view of the fact that this fundamental right is a basic human right that is why one of the members to the Information Commission, over-seeing the working of the public information officers, will be the nominee of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan while in view of the critical interpretations of legal questions the commission will also include a retired judge of the High Court as nominated by the Chief Justice and a nominee of the Bar council/association.
For proper explanation to the complexities of the working of government organizations, the Commission will include a retired senior civil servant also. As far as the appointment of public information officers, responsible for provision of information to any citizen requesting it, the Secretary Information revealed that all provincial government organizations have been asked to appoint such officers within a week.
