Indian police arrest lawyer for representing client in Rajouri

Srinagar, June 14, 2016 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, Indian police have arrested a lawyer for representing his client in Rajouri area of Jammu region.

This has been stated by the High Court Bar Association in a statement issued in Srinagar.

The statement said that police had arrested its member who had gone to Rajouri to defend his client.

“A frivolous criminal case has been register by the police at Rajouri against advocate Showkat Ahmad Thakur who had gone to plead a case of his client before the Women’s Police Station,” it said.

Instead of dismissing the case, the police booked him, which evidently it had no authority or power of jurisdiction to do, the statement added.

“The allegations levelled against Thakur are unfounded and baseless. He had gone to Rajouri to fulfil his professional obligations and had tried his best to defend his client,” the Bar Association said.

The lawyers’ body has decided to bring the matter into the notice of the chief justice of the High Court to save the honour, reputation and prestige of its member.
