Lahore: Punjab University Department of Sports for Women organized a ceremony to inaugurate two vehicles and awarding scholarship to outstanding women sports player, who won All Pakistan Inter-Universities Championships, here in the PU Women Sports Complex on Thursday.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest while Director Sports Prof Dr Zafar Rashid, Additional Director Sports (W) Mrs Shamsa Hashmi, Additional Director Sports Attia Nawaz, Resident Auditor Naeem Iqbal Qureshi, women players of Postgraduate College Wahdat Road, Govt Home Economics College Gulberg and Fatima Jinnah Degree College also attended the ceremony. It is worth mentioning here that the PU women players have bagged All Pakistan Inter-Universities Championships of hockey, handball, badminton and rowing.
Addressing the ceremony, VC Dr Mujahid Kamran said it was duty of academic institutes to promote extra-curricular capabilities of students, but unfortunately, he said there was grip of political culture in the Punjab University which now had been removed. “We could not become good human beings if we did not learn from win or defeat,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor the schools’ building and academic atmosphere could be made better if the government allocate at least four percent of GDP for education. He announced to reimburse departmental dues of students getting admissions on sports basis.
Earlier, Shamsa Hashmi, in her address, said sports activities had been promoted under the dynamic leadership of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran. She said scholarship for sports players had been raised from Rs 4,80,000/- to Rs 1.6 million. 52 students were being awarded scholarships worth Rs 3000 to Rs 8000.
She said the Sports Department had purchased vehicles to facilities its women players. She said 25 women players had been provided free of cost hostel accommodation while fee of 41 students had been waived off this year.
