IHK consumers pay far higher electricity duty than Indians

Srinagar, April 23, 2013 (PPI-OT): The people of Kashmir are not even spared of discriminatory treatment by the Indian authorities even in terms of imposition of harshest powers cuts and the charging of three times more electricity tariff than the consumers inside India.

The power consumers in occupied Kashmir have to pay 22 percent electricity duty that goes into the kitty of the Indian exchequer, while the same is much lower– just around five percent— is paid by the consumers of Indian states.

A report published in a local newspaper revealed that five percent electricity duty is levied on domestic consumers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi. And in Himachal Pradesh, the duty is very low – around 3 percent. While in Punjab and Kerala, consumers have to shell out 13 and 10 percent electricity duty respectively.

On the contrary the consumers in occupied Kashmir have to pay the highest duty despite vast hydroelectricity generation from the territory’s waters.
