Hina presents Pakistan’s National Report at United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva

Islamabad, October 30, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Foreign Minister, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar presented Pakistan’s national report on the promotion and protection of human rights before the Human Rights Council in Geneva today.

In her presentation, the Foreign Minister highlighted the achievements of the democratic government in the field of human rights including the ratification of core human rights treaties, establishment of the National Commission on Human Rights, and legislation on the rights of women and children. She emphasized that the government was committed to upholding the rights of all its citizens as well as to fulfilling its international human rights obligations.

The presentation of the report was part of the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review process, of the Human Rights Council, which covers all the member states of the United Nations. 86 countries participated in Pakistan’s UPR and acknowledged the efforts made by the Government for the promotion and protection of human rights.

The second cycle of the UPR commenced in May 2012 during which a number of countries including India, UK, Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa have already presented their Human Rights reports. In the current session, countries including Japan, Sri Lanka and Switzerland are also presenting their National Reports.

The Foreign Minister was leading a high-level delegation, which included Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Dr. Paul Bhatti, Advisor to Prime Minster on National Harmony, Mr. Riaz Fatyana, Chairman, National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights and Dr. Araish Kumar, MNA. Members of the delegation took the floor to respond to the comments and recommendations made by delegations as part of the review on a wide range of issues including the rights of women, children and minorities, independence of the judiciary and issues relating to the realization of economic, social and cultural rights.
