Islamabad, December 13, 2012 (PPI-OT): The High Commissioner of Mauritius, M. Rashid Danreeawoo called on the Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar here Thursday. The Advisor briefed him about various initiatives taken by the present government to improve the human rights situation in Pakistan.
While pointing out international commitments, the Advisor said, out of nine International covenants Pakistan has signed and ratified seven. He further said that four of them were ratified during the tenure of present democratically elected government.
These include International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) and UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The Advisor added that these conventions would also be implemented through domestic legislation.
He apprised the High Commissioner about recent legislative initiatives of the present Government for addressing human rights issues like establishment of National Commission for Human Rights and National Commission on the Status of Women and added that the bill on the establishment of Commission on children is under process.
The Advisor also told the High Commissioner that the appointment of human rights defenders is also under consideration for further promotion and protection of human rights in Pakistan.
The advisor reiterated that in order to improve the human rights situation in Pakistan all the stakeholders are taken on board in the process of legislation and that’s the reason the government has succeeded in undertaking prompt legislation with proposed mechanism of implementation.
The High Commissioner appreciated the efforts of the Advisor for taking effective steps for appeasing human rights situation in Pakistan. He also evinced interest in seeking guidance and cooperation from Pakistan in the field of human rights issues to which the Advisor agreed.
