Lahore, March 20, 2017 (PPI-OT): Chairman Higher Education Commission of Pakistan Dr Mukhtar Ahmed visited the meat shop of University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore, suggested expanding this project to other cities and assured UVAS of all-out HEC assistance in this regard.
The HEC Chairman appreciated the UVAS for taking this initiative of providing safe and quality meat to people and called for enhancing research and development activities in the discipline of meat science.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha briefed the HEC Chairman on this project and said that the university in collaboration with the Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab has taken this initiative to provide traceable, hormone- and antibiotic-free pure quality buffalo calf meat to consumers at a competitive price as well as create awareness among consumers about quality beef. He said that UVAS has involved its postgraduate students in this initiative to impart entrepreneurial skills to them, besides creating entrepreneurship opportunities for them.
Prof Pasha said that this project will also help farmers to have easy access to market, consequently improving their economic status. He said that in this project latest processing and packaging technologies such as vacuum packing and modified atmospherics packing are being introduced under the supervision of UVAS Meat Science experts to keep meat fresh and tasteful for a longer time. He said that buffalo calves are fattened before slaughtering and this can be a permanent earning source for farmers and also help establish a quality beef value chain in the country. He said that through this project the university will set an example for other industries/businesses to start such outlets to facilitate people/stakeholders of their respective areas.
