Karachi, April 13, 2016 (PPI-OT):Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan, has announced forming of a task force for preparing a policy of providing effective and timely medical treatment to patients suffering from cancer. The task force would also make recommendations for procurement of the medical equipment, machinery and medicines for the fiscal budgets 2016-17, for both the federal and Sindh governments.
The decision was made after Governor’s briefing at Karachi Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (KIRAN) about the status of existing facilities. The Governor directed the officials concerned to prepare the policy for creating awareness about the illness and treatment of cancer. He observed that timely diagnosis of cancer during the first or second stages was important as delayed diagnosis in the third or fourth stages makes the illness incurable.
“Simple precautions can help us avoid mouth, throat and lungs cancer,” he said. He said besides the Sindh Health Department, the institutes providing treatment of cancer also need to create awareness about the illness among the people. The Governor emphasized on the need of paying special attention to the growing incidence of blood cancer among children. He said some 11 centres and institutes in the province were providing treatment for cancer but he acknowledged, there was need of increasing the number of facilities and further improving the health services being provided there.
Dr Ebad appreciated the services being offered by KIRAN. Speaking on the occasion, KIRAN’s Director Akhtar Ahmed informed that 42,000 people each year are diagnosed with cancer in the province. He apprised that around 140 patients are provided radiotherapy treatment through three machines at the centre. Dr Ahmed observed that early diagnosis could help save the lives.
