Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization mission calls on Sindh Chief Minister

Karachi, March 08, 2016 (PPI-OT):Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said under Expanded Programme on Immunization his government was committed to eradicate and reduce morbidity and mortality caused by vaccine preventable diseases. “We are going to develop a scientific monitoring system of vaccinators to ensure and increase immunization coverage.”

This he said while talking to a high power Mission from GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization) led by Deputy CEO Anuradha Gupta, Senior Country Manager Hamidreza Setayesh here at the CM House today. The members of the Mission include, WHO Programme Management Director Jaouad Mahjour, BMGF Director Vaccine Delivery Orin Levince, UNICEF Regional Advisor Douglas James Nobel and Regional heads of UNICEF, WHO, Gates Foundation, USAID and others. The chief minister was assisted by Health Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Principal Secretary Alamuddin Bullo, Secretary Health Saeed mangnijo and EPI programme heads.

The chief minister said that he was thankful to GAVI for their interest and support to make the immunization programme successful. “I am personally monitoring the progress of immunization programme,” he said and added that its present coverage was 35 percent, therefore special attention was being given to increase the coverage.

The Mission committed for the future support to Pakistan in the introduction of new Vaccine, Cold Chain optimizing, advocacy and communication activities, as Pakistan is the major recipient of GAVI support which is over $ 9 million from 2001 to 2016.

The Mission said that there are many challenges in the Routine Immunization Services of Sindh but “we have observed improvement compared to their last visit of Sindh in all sectors that included Program Management to Service delivery,” said Dr Gupta.

The mission suggested the government to develop GPRS system monitor the vaccinators and vaccination. There were some issues of coverage that need to be addressed properly. They also observed that the deployment and distribution of vaccinators in different areas have not been made properly. Therefore, problems have emerged in proper coverage.

The Chief Minister assured them that the health department has the capabilities and the will to implement the GAVI mission recommendation in true letter and spirit. As a matter of fact, health is on top priority of his government. “I want to ensure the health of our children by taking drastic measures,” he said.
