Islamabad, July 04, 2012 (PPI-OT): International Strategic Conference on ‘Future of Pakistan’ was held in London on 28-29 June 2012. The event was organized by the Forum for International Relations Development (FIRD), London.
In his message of support for the Conference President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari commended FIRD for holding the event on the Future of Pakistan and welcomed the interest and participation of the distinguished scholars in the Conference.
In his message the President underlined that Pakistan’s sacrifices in fight against militancy and extremism were unparalleled and its resolve unshakable. He reiterated that Pakistan would remain committed to its chosen path of prosperity at home and peace and development in the neighbourhood.
The President urged the international community to recognize the multiple challenges Pakistan was facing and acknowledge the positive role it was playing for the economic prosperity and political stability of the region.
Dr Farooq Sattar, Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis, in his remarks, stated that sovereignty of a country lay in its economic independence. He said that extremism, weak economy, and security situation were the major challenges faced by Pakistan.
According to the Minister, Pakistan could overcome these challenges by diverting its resources towards socio-economic uplift of the people, ensuring enhanced participation of people in the democratic process and making endeavours towards attainment of economic independence.
Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner in London Syed Zulfiqar Gardezi said given the potential and resilience of its people, Pakistan’s future was promising and bright. He said that Pakistan valued its relations with the international community and was committed to working with it to achieve the common goals of global peace and prosperity.
He termed Pakistan, UK relations strong and deep-rooted, and hoped that with growing linkages between peoples and governments of the two countries, these relations would further flourish in future.
Other prominent speakers at the two-day Conference included Rt. Hon Sadiq Khan MP, Eric Geelan (US Embassy), Prof. Stephen Cohen (Brookings Institution), Prof. Anatol Lieven (Kings College), and General (Retd) Syed Athar Ali, former Defence Secretary of Pakistan.
The FIRD is London based think-tank which has conducted number of similar events in the past. It aims to finding political solutions to global issues.
