FUIW conference declares support for Al-Quds University

Rabat (IINA) – Wrapping up its 7th session at the headquarters of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Rabat on Tuesday, the General Conference of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW) declared the support of member universities for Al-Quds University in its scientific, academic and scholarly mission.

The member universities also declared solidarity with Al-Quds University in its resistance to the Israeli occupation’s practices against the University and the holy city of Jerusalem, as well as their support for its defense of the Palestinian, Arab and Islamic identity and history of Jerusalem in the present and future.

The two-day conference urged member universities to establish a cooperation network and a twinning program with Al-Quds University in all academic fields, including the exchange of faculty and students, academic visits, scholarly conferences and scientific research activities. It also called upon them to sign cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding with Al-Quds University in order to establish academic partnerships and entrench the concept of academic diplomacy.

Further, the conference called for setting up a fund for supporting Jerusalemite students to pursue their studies at the FUIM’s member universities, including Al-Quds University, to be financed through Waqf allowances, or through “one-dollar deduction” of the universities fixed incomes or a percentage deductible from one of the budget items of member universities, and commissioning the FUIW General Secretariat to follow up on the establishment of this fund and development of its management mechanisms.

The conference approved a continuous scholarship program for Jerusalemite students and trainees to pursue their studies at overseas universities in disciplines of urgent need and priority to be determined by Al-Quds University, while entrusting the FUIW General Secretariat with coordinating the implementation of the program’s procedures.

In the same vein, the conference called for the establishment of educational pathways and academic chairs as well as the adoption of research plans for studies on Jerusalem FUIW universities, in cooperation with Al-Quds University, and in line with their disciplines and regulations.

Other key recommendations included holding annual symposia and experts’ meetings on Jerusalem, as of 2017, which marks the 50th anniversary of the city’s occupation, in addition to inviting researchers from all disciplines to prepare peer-reviewed researches and studies on Jerusalem for publication in Arabic, English and French by Al-Quds University, to serve as a documented reference on Jerusalem.

The participants called on Arab, Islamic and international organizations concerned with higher education issues to provide financial and technical support to the higher education institutions in Palestine, especially Al-Quds University, and to contribute to the development of education and research services. They also called for contribution to the improvement of Al-Quds University’s infrastructure and modernization of its science and computer labs.

Moreover, the participants in the conference have strongly insisted on the activation of the principle of academic boycott of Israeli occupation’s higher education and research institutions, calling on FUIW universities to abstain from setting up any relations with those institutions.

The participants thanked Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, head of Al-Quds Committee, for his care and support for educational, scientific and cultural institutions in Jerusalem, and called on the FUIW General Secretariat to coordinate with Al-Quds University and the relevant institutions to ensure follow-up on the implementation of this statement.
