Islamabad: The financial inclusion of women through micro financing is fundamental for eradication of poverty in the country. “Better access to finance not only increases economic growth, but also helps fight poverty, and reduces income gaps between the rich and the poor people.”
Goodwill Ambassador for Women Empowerment, Fiza Batool Gilani, expressed these views while taking briefing from the officials of Pakistan Microfinance Network and Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) here in Islamabad.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Begum Shehnaz Wazir Ali, and secretary Ministry of Human Rights, Saeed Ahmed Alvi, also took part in the briefing.
The Goodwill Ambassador said that through the provision of small loans and work opportunities to women, they can be made economically empowered. “More the women become the part of work force, more economically empowered they will be and, consequently, better social status they will enjoy in the community.”
Fiza Gilani emphasized the need for inclusion of women at policy-making levels in industry and institutions so that their presence help ensure the formulation of pro-women policies.
Fiza Gilani appreciated the work of Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), which has undertaken, in collaboration with civil society organizations, various projects across the country for the economic and social uplift of people; it came up during the briefing that PPAF had spent over $1.3 billion on various poverty alleviation programmes over the last ten years.
To promote the cause of national inclusion, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund(PPAF) has provided 4000 scholarships to Baloch students; out of these 4000 students, 700 are girl students, who are studying not only in various institutions of Baluchistan but also in other parts of the country, CEO of PPAF, Qazi Azmat Isa, told the Goodwill Ambassador.
Begum Shehnaz Wazir Ali mentioned that poverty alleviation is one of foremost goals of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and “National Assembly Committee on MDGs” has now been put in place to scrutinize the progress on the MDGs; this National Assembly Committee will give its recommendations to the parliament and the government, Begum Wazir Ali concluded.
