Fehmida urges for concerted efforts for awareness against diabetes

Islamabad, November 13, 2012 (PPI-OT): Dr. Fehmida Mirza Speaker National Assembly has urged the World health organization, diabetes organizations, NGOs and health departments for concerted efforts for awareness against diabetes. She called for joining hands to stop the spread of global outbreak of this chronic disease. She said this in her message on the World Diabetes Day being commemorated under the auspicious of United Nations throughout the globe.

Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that World Diabetes Day serves as an opportunity to promote awareness that every person with diabetes or at risk of diabetes deserves the best possible quality of education, prevention and care available.

She said that a cohesive and a comprehensive strategy should be adopted to set norms and standards, promote surveillance, encourage prevention, raise awareness and strengthen prevention and control of this fatal disease.

She said that Diabetes apart from adults, adolescents could also strike children of any age, even toddlers and babies. She said that if diabetes is not detected early enough in a child or misdiagnosed, the disease could be fatal or result in serious brain damage.

She attributed the lack of financial constraints, the main of deaths of Children because their families cannot afford the medication they need. She said that as reported by World health agencies, diabetes causes 5% deaths of all deaths globally due to diabetes.

The Speaker said that a multidisciplinary approach should be adopted involving health professionals for raising awareness against diabetes and its proper mediation and prognosis after its diagnosis to overcome this disease.

The global diabetes community including International Diabetes Federation member associations, diabetes organizations, NGOs, health departments and companies should develop an extensive range of activities, tailored to a variety of groups for promoting advocacy amongst masses against adverse effects of diabetes on electronic and print media emphasizing on screenings of information relating to diabetes and its complications, conducting of walks, conferences, seminars and press conferences.

She called upon the federal and provincial healthcare agencies for focusing on disadvantaged communities and vulnerable groups worldwide, with particular attention on populations migrating from rural to urban centers.

She said that those people face highest difficulties in accessing optimal healthcare those who are outside the health care system, or are less likely to access or become aware of available services. She said that our mission should be to prevent diabetes whenever possible and, where not possible, to minimize complications and maximize quality of life.
