Islamabad: At present, lack of compliance to basic quality and health standards by some manufacturers has become a serious issue in Pakistan. Owing to this shortcoming, many of our exports are also unable to penetrate international markets successfully. This was stated by Senator Haji Ghulam Ali, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry in his address on the occasion of the 42nd World Standards Day seminar organized by FPCCI in collaboration with Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) on the theme of “International Standards: Creating Confidence Globally. Mir Changez Khan Jamali, the Federal Minister of Science and Technology was the Chief Guest at the seminar.
The President-FPCCI also assured both PSQCA and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) of FPCCI’s commitment towards helping the former achieve cross-the-board compliance to quality standards by manufacturers in Pakistan, and stated that FPCCI would assist them in every possible manner to achieve their objectives.
While delivering the keynote address on the occasion, Mr. Liaquat Ali Arain, Director General-PSQCA highlighted the activities of PSQCA towards creating awareness regarding international standardization among members of the business community. Dr. Shahzad Afzal, Deputy Director General, Standards Development Centre (SDC/PSQCA) made a detailed presentation about the role of PSQCA in “Harmonization of Pakistan’s Standards with International Standards”. He was followed by other distinguished speakers such as Mr. Hameed Maker (for the Helpline Trust), Mr. Umer Ghouri (for the Consumer Eye), Ms. Huma Bukhari (Chairperson of FPCCI Standing Committee for Consumer Rights Protection) and Mr. Kaukab Iqbal (for Consumer Associates of Pakistan), who highlighted the importance of Standardization with a view to proving consumer confidence.
While delivering his address, the Chief Guest, Mr. Jamali, appreciated the President-FPCCI’s offer to extend all manner of support to PSQCA and MoST in improving the standard of quality made available to local consumers. He also lauded FPCCI’s dedication towards assisting PSQCA and MoST in the past, stating that this seminar was being held for the third consecutive year at Federation House, which demonstrated that the business community was eager to cooperate with the Government in ensuring that the consumer receives a premium quality product, rather than a counterfeit and low quality product.
Towards the end of the seminar, all speakers and panellists were presented with crests to thank them for their participation. Also present on the occasion were Mr. Dawood Usman Jakhura, Vice President-FPCCI and Syed Masood Alam Rizvi, Secretary General-FPCCI.
