Islamabad, October 02, 2012 (PPI-OT): Haji Fazal Kadir Khan Sherani, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has called for the beginning of a new era of collaboration between FPCCI and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) following informal discussions held with the Chief Executive of TDAP.
The President FPCCI met Mr. Tahir Raza Naqvi, Chief Executive of the TDAP, who paid a courtesy call paid to the FPCCI Head Office, Karachi. Also present on the occasion were FPCCI Vice Presidents Sheikh Shakil Ahmed Dhingra, Mr. Iqbal Dawood Pakwalla, Shaikh Haroon Rashid, Begum Salma Ahmed and Mr. Azhar Majeed Sheikh; as well as Mr. Nasiruddin Sheikh, Mr. Humayun Sayeed, Sheikh Imtiaz and Mr. Tariq Haleem.
While assuring TDAP of FPCCI’s support and cooperation in organizing the upcoming Expo 2012, which will be held in Karachi in October this year, the President proposed that in future, FPCCI may be taken on board as part of a joint working group along with TDAP in order to ensure more active participation from the business community in the export promotion event, which is held every year.
Mr. Sherani put forward FPCCI’s contention that TDAP should not participate in retail fairs, since its mandate was to ensure promotion of Pakistan’s exports. At the same time, he said that in view of FPCCI’s status as the country’s biggest organizer of trade-related events after TDAP, the apex body should receive the Government’s support in participating in trade events, such as the Chengdu Fair and the Libya Fair.
He pointed out that TDAP’s support was especially needed in the case of single country exhibitions, such as the Made in Pakistan Expo which was concluded in Mumbai last month. Mr. Sherani said that the private sector must be made a part of decision making in matters pertaining to the Export Development Fund and the Export Marketing Development Fund. In this respect, FPCCI’s consultation is necessary because FPCCI is the apex trade body of the country
Mr. Haroon Rashid, VP FPCCI said that in the era of the defunct Export Promotion Bureau, there used to be a tradition of involving the private sector in drawing the schedule for participation in trade events by Pakistan. This may be revived by TDAP, in order to ensure an increase in interest in trade delegations, which was necessary in order to promote trade. He especially called for the subsidization of participation in trade fairs by female entrepreneurs from Pakistan.
The Chief Executive TDAP said that TDAP was allocating designated space to FPCCI at the Expo venue, where B2B meetings between Pakistani businessmen and their foreign counterparts would be held, in order to help achieve the main objective of the Expo.
He also said that over 900 buyers were expected at the Expo this year. Mr. Naqvi also appreciated FPCCI’s assurance of support and active participation in the Expo, and said that all concerns raised by the business community would be given due consideration.
The President-FPCCI welcomed Mr. Naqvi’s proposal, and said that FPCCI office bearers would participate actively in the Expo through their presence at the venue to hold meetings with the visiting businessmen.
