Federal Ombudsman investigates maladministration resulting in measles outbreak causing 413 deaths

Islamabad, January 24, 2013 (PPI-OT): Acting Federal Ombudsman Salman Faruqui chaired a high level meeting pursuant to his taking cognizance of measles outbreak and to investigate the possibility of maladministration resulting in 413 tragic deaths of children in the past three months.

The meeting, which lasted around three hours, was attended by World Health Organization (WHO) Representative, Dr. Guido Sabatinelli, Country Representative, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Mr. Dan Rohrmann, Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, MNA/SAPM on Social Sector, Dr. Azra Pehecho, MNA who is monitoring polio vaccination, Secretary Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination and heads of the concerned Federal agencies besides experts. The participants offered their assessment of the situation, pointed out weaknesses in the system of procurement of vaccines and gaps in implementation, especially in the post devolution scenario.

The participants of the meeting also briefed the Advisors Committee constituted by Salman Faruqui comprising ex-chief Justice Mr. Muhammad Raza and former Federal Health Secretaries, Syed Anwar Mahmood and Mr. Ejaz Raheem about their considered views regarding responsibility, if any, for the 413 deaths caused by measles.
