Karachi: Provincial Minister for Environment Khalid Umer(Shaikh Muhammad Afzal) has said that the presence of hydrant at the main gate of Karachi Zoo was putting adverse effect on the internal and external environment of zoo and posing danger to the lives of citizens especially children and women therefore KWSB should shift it to some other place.
Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed has in a short time took worthy steps for bringing improvement in Karachi Zoo, however, there is always room for further improvement. He expressed these views on an unscheduled visit to Karachi Zoo on Monday.
Secretary Environment Mir Hussain Ali, Director General Environment Sindh, Senior Director Culture and Sports Muhammad Rehan Khan and other officers were also present on this occasion. Provincial Minister went to different parts of zoo where he called the overall cleanliness conditions satisfactory, though further improvement was stressed also. Director Zoo Bashir Saddozai while giving a briefing to minister said that Karachi Zoo which spread on 33 acres had been established in 1881.
Despite of limited resources, KMC was taking all measures to provide better recreational facilities to citizens. Colouring and painting work on animal’s cages, corridors and tree stems was underway speedily and two hundred rose saplings were planted in the Mughal Garden which is part of its renovation and restoration.
He said that deputation of more than 20 city wardens and patrolling of mobile had provided sense of security to citizens visiting the zoo with their families. Bashir Saddozai said that Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed had besides taking short term measures also started work on the long term planning for making Karachi Zoo a beautiful and exemplary place for recreation.
A team of engineers lead by Chief Engineer South Niaz Soomro was conducting a complete survey of the inner and external areas of zoo after than PC-1 will be prepared. He said that the citizens of Karachi would get the gift of new animals on the eve of Zoo Day on 10th January. Environment Minister appreciated the measures taken by Administrator Karachi for bringing improvement in Karachi Zoo.
He said lot of complaints about zoo was received but we found the conditions here much better. He said the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board should shift it hydrant from main gate of zoo to some other place. He also directed zoo administration to ensure daily cleaning of animal’s cages.
