Education essential for progress and prosperity: Punjab Chief Minister

Lahore, August 27, 2013 (PPI-OT): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that education is essential for progress and prosperity of the country. He said that Punjab government has taken revolutionary and unprecedented measures for the promotion of education during the last five years.

He said due to the steps taken by the government, literacy rate has substantially improved while enrolment ratio of children in schools has also increased. He said that provision of resources for talented children is not expenditure but useful investment.

He said that brilliant students are a precious asset and guarantee to a glorious future of the country. He said that laptops programme initiated by Punjab is being followed in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh which is the proof of the fact that revolutionary reforms introduced in education sector in Punjab are being appreciated not only in the country but also abroad.

He was talking to a representative delegation of students in Islamabad today which also included position-holder students of different Boards of Education. Talking to the students’ delegation, the Chief Minister said that education is of vital importance for the stability and progress of a country and the world history is witness to the fact that only those nations have progressed and prospered as have given proper attention to education. He said that Punjab government took revolutionary measures for the development of education sector during its last tenure.

He said that establishment of Daanish schools is proving a milestone in the promotion of education. He said that easy access is being provided to children of the poor by setting up Daanish schools in far-flung and backward areas. He said that educational facilities even better than Aitchison and Grammar schools are now available to the children of the poorest families in remote areas of the province due to this project.

He said that promotion of education has always been the priority of the government and that is why 14 Daanish schools have been established in seven different districts of the province for the benefit of less-privileged and resource-less but brilliant students while six new Daanish schools will be set up at a cost of three billion rupees during the current fiscal year.

The Chief Minister said that government distributed more than two lakh laptops costing billions of rupees among talented students purely on merit basis during its last tenure. Similarly, he said, laptops will be given to intelligent students this year as well. Shahbaz Sharif said that Punjab Educational Endowment Fund is a historic programme and its volume has increased to 12 billion rupees.

He said that due to this fund more than 50 thousand students are continuing their studies and no talented student will now remain deprived of higher education merely due to financial constraints. He further said that in accordance with millennium development goals, ensuring access to education to every child of school going age is the duty of the state and the educational policy of Punjab government has been evolved specifically to achieve this objective.

He said 100 percent enrolment of children is the target of the government for which universal primary education campaign has been launched. The Chief Minister said that the goal of 100 percent literacy rate will be achieved within next few years through enrolment of all children of school going age.

He further said that a sum of 3.5 billion is being spent for the provision of missing facilities in all girl schools of the province. He said that provision of funds for boy and girl students is yielding encouraging results. He said that promotion of education can also help in removing ignorance, terrorism and lawlessness from the society.

The delegation of the students while appreciating the measures taken by the Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif for promotion of education said that the revolutionary programmes launched by Punjab government for poor but talented students are unprecedented and provision of educational facilities to students is a big achievement of the Chief Minister.
