Karachi: Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan welcomed the release on bail of Dr Khalil Chishti and hoped that such a gesture would help improve relations between the two countries. He also appreciated the efforts made by President Asif Ali Zardari in this regard. However, the Governor stressed for the return of Dr Chishti to Pakistan on humanitarian grounds and assured his family of making every effort to bring him back.
It may be mentioned that the octogenarian professor of Botany at the Karachi University, Dr Khalil, was arrested on March 14, 1992, on charges of killing a man on the premises of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti’s shrine during a clash there.
Taking notice of his prolonged incarceration and growing health problems, Dr Ebad had met with Chishti’s relatives in Karachi several times and sent applications to the ministries of foreign and interior as well as the prime minister and the president to get Dr Chishti released from an Indian prison on humanitarian grounds.
