Doctors threaten agitation on drug scam

Srinagar, April 16, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Doctors Association has threatened to come out on the streets and launch an agitation if an impartial probe is not ordered into the supply of spurious drugs to the hospitals in the territory.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, the Association President, Dr. Nisar-ul-Hassan said that the authorities should register formal FIR against the former health minister Sham Lal Sharma and members of Indian purchase committee in the case of supply of spurious drugs.

Spurious drug business is flourishing in the Valley over the years involving top officials of Health & Medical Education Department, Drug Controller Organization and pharmaceutical distributors.

Fresh documentary evidence suggests that a life saving drug was supplied to the Valley hospitals even after three analytical reports declared it as sub-standard.

According to official documents which were presented by Doctors Association at a jam-packed news conference in Srinagar, the drug namely Curecef-1000 (Ceftriaxone Sodium) under batch number RHI- 05/54 was first supplied to hospitals across Kashmir in year 2011.

Dr. Nisar asked the youth to come out and lodge strong protests against the supply of spurious drugs. He said doctors are being blamed for the whole mess adding that there is no role of doctors in the supply of drugs to the hospitals either in Kashmir.

“Hundreds of people may have died due to the consumption of these spurious drugs in Kashmir. The worst hit in the valley would have been the ones who received treatment in the Soura Medical Complex,” he added.
