Islamabad, May 22, 2014 (PPI-OT): Director General of Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), Major General Khawar Hanif called on Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan here today. Talking to him the Minister said that drug use affects every fiber of the society and efforts should be made to completely eradicate this menace.
Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan appreciated the role being played by ANF over the years due to which Pakistan is being declared a poppy free country for the last few years. He also asked ANF to take stringent measures to control smuggling of drugs from across the border into Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Minister expressed his concern over the possibility of increase in the production of opiates in Afghanistan in post-2014 scenario. He asked DG ANF to be mindful of this and take necessary steps to mitigate its effects on Pakistan.
He asked the ANF to remain vigilant about the new trends emerging in drug smuggling and their destinations. DG ANF briefed the Minister about the steps being taken by the Force prevention, interdiction, seizures, prosecution and drug demand reduction of Narcotics in Pakistan.
He highlighted the challenges being faced by ANF in intelligence acquisition, operational capability, dearth of manpower and budgetary constraints including the environmental challenges emanating from drug situation in neighboring countries. The Minister assured that ban on recruitment in ANF would soon be lifted and its budgetary constraints addressed to help the Force in overcoming related operational challenges.
