The Diamond Jubilee Convention of Parliamentarians, chaired by Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, passed a unanimous resolution, expressing resolve to strive together to make Quaid-i-Azam’s vision of a federal, parliamentary, democratic and prosperous Pakistan a substantive reality.
The resolution presented by former parliamentarian Kashmala Tariq, emphasized that principles of democracy, freedom, equality, tolerance and social justice, as enunciated in the constitution, shall be fully observed.
The resolution reaffirmed that the people of Pakistan will prosper and attain their rightful and honored place amongst the nations of the world.
It pledged to advance the agenda of access to justice for the people of Pakistan whilst committing to safeguard and protect the minorities as equal citizens with unfettered rights, privileges and obligations. The convention was attended by incumbent and former parliamentarians.
A historic session of the National Assembly chaired by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was held on Saturday night in connection with golden jubilee celebrations of Pakistan’s Independence.
Speaking on the occasion, PML-N leader Khawaja Asif said whilst the nation is celebrating Independence Day, it is also for us to do retrospection as to what the country achieved and lost over the last seventy five years. He regretted that certain elements are trying to sow the seeds of hate and despondency.
Khurshid Ahmad Shah of PPP said it is the first time in the country’s history that the parliament is also playing its role to celebrate Independence Day. He paid glowing tributes to those who rendered immense sacrifices for the creation of Pakistan.
Ahmad Hassan Deharr of PTI said we should stand behind the national institutions as it is important for the survival of Pakistan.
Asad Mahmood of JUI (F) said it is time for renewal of the pledge that no compromise will be made on the sovereignty and integrity of this country. He said we have waged a struggle for a prosperous future of Pakistan.
Earlier as the session began, the chair said that the portrait of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah which was painted by Saeed Akhtar for the assembly of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto has now been acquired and installed at the National Assembly Hall behind his chair. He said under this portrait, the constitution of 1973 was passed and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto took oath of office.
The chair accompanied by the parliamentary leaders cut the ribbon marking the installation of the portrait at the Assembly Hall.
As the clock struck 12 o’clock, there was a splendid show of fireworks at D-Chowk in Islamabad marking the advent of 14th August. People belonging to different walks of life including the parliamentarians witnessed the fireworks.
