Lahore: The compensation rates for land to be acquired for Diamer Basha Dam Project (DBDP) in District Kohistan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province will be identical to that of Gilgit Baltistan (GB).
Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Shakil Durrani made this assurance to KPK Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti in a meeting.
A Press Release issued by WAPDA states that an amount of Rs. 92 million had already been deposited with the Kohistan District Collector for the purpose, while additional amount vis-à-vis enhanced rates of the land in District Kohistan will also be transferred to the Collector within 15 days for its onward payment to the land owners in the district.
In June 2011, Kohistan District Administration raised the demand of enhanced rates as compensation for land in District Kohistan. Subsequently, in a meeting held at the office of Commissioner Hazara Division, it was mutually agreed that the rates of Land for Kohistan affectees would be equated with the rates approved by the Ministerial Committee constituted for District Diamer in GB by adopting increased rates of Rs. 100,000 (Rupees one lac) per kanal for barren land and Rs. 259,000 (Rupees two lac fifty nine thousand) per kanal for uncultivated land.
Resultantly, compensation amount for the land to be acquired in district Kohistan has risen from Rs. 92 million to Rs. 262 billion.
In view of the decision, the required procedure is being completed on priority and the outstanding amount will be made available with Kohistan District Collector within 15 days for its onward disbursement to the landowners in Kohistan.
WAPDA has asked Hazara Division Commissioner and Kohistan District Coordination Officer to initiate the payment of compensation, which is already available with them.
It is also important to note that the land acquisition for DBD is in process. The Government has already paid an amount of Rs. 5 billion to GB and KPK governments for the purpose, while another Rs. 18 billion has been allocated for the current fiscal year in this regard.
