Islamabad: Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Changez Khan Jamali has said that cultural dimension is central pillar of education for sustainable development. He was speaking at 36th General Conference of UNESCO here this afternoon.
He further said that cultural traits of society, diversity of cultural context and participatory approaches are key levers in education for sustainable development, says a press release received from Paris here today.
The theme of the conference is, ”Education for sustainable development through peace”. Earlier Mr. Raila Odinga, Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Boris Tadic, President of Serbia, Mrs. Magarita Cedeno De Fernandez, first lady of Dominican Republic, Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, first lady of Azerbaijan, Mr Pal SCHMITT, President of the Republic of Hungary, Mr Ali BONGO ONDIMBA, President of the Republic of Gabon, Mr Alassane OUATTARA, President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Mr Tillman THOMAS, Prime Minister of Grenada, Mr Pascal Irenée KOUPAKI, Prime Minister of the Republic of Benin, Irina BOKOVA, Director-General of UNESCO and Ms Eleonora MITROFANOVA, Chairperson of the UNESCO Executive Board spoke on the subject.
During his address the Minister suggested that a leaders’ forum be included in future General Conferences for intellectual inputs by the Heads of States in order to set policy functions.
He said that UNESCO’s core mandate is the key to both sustainable development and promotion of culture of peace in this century. He also proposed that the dimension of global citizenship be added to “six education for all” goals for the promotion of culture of global peace.
