Demos in Kishtwar against gang-rape of minor girl

Srinagar, July 28 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, people held forceful demonstrations in Kishtwar district against the gang rape of a minor girl by the members of Indian army-sponsored so-celled Village Defence Committee.

The incident took place on the intervening night of July 24 and 25 when a 15-year-old girl was abducted and gang-raped by four members of the VDC in Bhatkot area of the district. Later, after the girl returned home and informed her family members about her ordeal, people took out demonstrations in the district in protest against the heinous crime. They demanded severe punishment for the culprits.

Police have arrested two of the involved persons identified as Ranjeet Singh and Sanjeet Kumar.

Meanwhile, the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani and senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, have expressed deep shock over the sexual assault on the minor girl, demanding exemplary punishment to the perpetrators.

Syed Ali Gilani in a statement said, “Muslim community in Jammu region in addition to atrocities perpetrated by the personnel of Indian forces and VDC members faces more enormous and tough situation. It has been proved by the rape incident of a minor girl.” He said that the men in uniform were encouraged as the personnel of Indian forces involved in Kunanposhpora and Shopian tragedies were not prosecuted for their offences against women.

Referring to the recent desecration of holy Quran and killing of peaceful protesters in Gool area of Ramban he said, “How can you expect justice in sexual assault of a minor girl when evidences in Gool like incidents are being concealed and tampered with.”

He demanded immediate disarmament and dissolution of VDCs and said that the aim of these committees was nothing other than to suppress Muslim community in Jammu and put them at the mercy of communal elements.

Shabbir Ahmad Shah in his statement in Srinagar expressing deep anguish and resentment over the incident showed solidarity with the family of the minor girl. “The track record of village defence committees (VDCs) is replete with murders and rapes,” he said and warned the puppet administration of serious consequences if any attempt was made to shield the culprits.
