Srinagar, April 18, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, in what signalling the least respect for adherence to the human rights values, the Director General of Police, Ashok Prasad has said that curfew is far better than casualties.
He gave the justification of curfew while reacting to a statement made by the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik that police enforced curfew and locked up people inside their houses after the execution of Muhammad Afzal Guru.
Instead of acknowledging the people’s right to stage peaceful protests, Ashok Prasad in a media interview said that curfew was imposed “in the interest of people.” He evaded the question about miseries of children due to lack of milk and patients due to shortage of medicines under curfew.
Towards the end of the interview, he, however, conceded that as far as restricting the movement of the people and imposing curfew was concerned, police had its own compulsions.
