Karachi, February 15, 2019 (PPI-OT): Corneal transplantation and Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (feeko emulsification) being resumed in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s Spencer Eye Hospital from today as four corneas brought from Sri Lanka will be transplanted in four patients in the hospital. Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar inaugurated the Corneal transplantation and Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery department on Friday along with Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, senior director health and medical services Dr. Birbal Genani, lion Abubakar of Lions Club Pakistan, former MS Dr. Niaz Barohi, Faisal Edhi and others.
Speaking in the ceremony held in the SEH Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar said that a committee being constituted comprising of former senior directors and present medical superintendent to give its recommendations for making the Spencer Eye Hospital operational in a better way whereas arrangement for bringing cornea from Sri Lanka was also made, KMC will seek for four cornea every month to transplant these in the eyes of four patients.
He said due to no attention in past hospitals suffered and were in bad condition, we are now making efforts to bring as much improvement in our hospitals as we could so that poor patients could get low cost or free medical treatment facilities. He asked the well offs to come forward and offer their services for betterment of medical and health facilities in the city. Mayor Karachi said that Spencer Eye Hospital not only provide treatment of eye diseases and operations to citizens of Karachi but patients from all over Pakistan and from abroad also availed these facilities.
He said the corneal transplantation cost Rs1.5Lac in private hospitals and Rs50 thousand incurs on cataract laser surgery which can be unbearable for poor people whereas we are providing these facilities free of cost to needy patients. Metropolitan commissioner Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman said the Spencer Eye Hospital was a big name when I was doing my MBBS and renowned personalities availed such services here but now present condition of this hospital is very painful to see and now we have to make this hospital operational again. He expressed hope that with the attention of Mayor Karachi and the Lions Club of Pakistan we will succeed in bringing the glory of Spencer Eye Hospital back. He said the government has this responsibility to focus on the services provided in the health and education sector. Faisal Edhi, Dr. Niaz Barohi, Dr. Birbal Genani, lion Abubakar and others also spoke on this occasion.
