Lahore, August 22, 2013 (PPI-OT): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that construction of more water reservoirs and dams are essential for overcoming the destructions of floods on permanent basis so that the water could be stored in new dams and utilized for country’s development. He said that the entire nation would have to adopt consensus in this regard.
He expressed these views during an interview to a private TV Channel while reviewing the relief activities for flood affectees at Talwar Post Kasur today. He said that in the past 13 years, no consensus could be developed over any national issue except NFC Award in which Punjab sacrificed Rs.11 billion of its share.
He said that four provinces including Gilgit Baltistan should evolve a national policy. Shahbaz Sharif said that elite is involved in electricity theft. He said that India has constructed new dams which have played an important role in lessening the destruction by floods. He said that India used the water of dams for the development of agriculture whereas we did not construct any new dam after Mangla and Tarbela.
The Chief Minister said that till 90s, the ratio of hydle electricity was 70% whereas thermal 30% but now the situation is contrary to it. He said that billions of dollars are being spent on the import of furnace oil which the country cannot afford.
He said that we have to construct water reservoirs and use our own resources. He said that there are a number of examples that those nations which made honesty, trust and hard working their motto achieved tremendous progress in the world.
He said that we can also put the country on the road to progress by dint of hard work. Replying to a question, Shahbaz Sharif said that political leaders should serve the people in this hour of trial. Replying to another question about loadshedding, he said that for the first time in the history of Pakistan, the electricity production has reached to 16000 megawatts and there were substantial decrease in loadshedding. He said that launching new energy generating projects in Punjab is his responsibility and Punjab Energy Council has been set up in this regard.
He said that work has also been started on Nandipur Power Project. Shahbaz Sharif said that if PML-N government could not decrease loadshedding, enhance electricity production and launch new projects during next five years, he will quit politics. Replying to a question, Shahbaz Sharif said that there is need of a comprehensive policy for overcoming terrorism.
He said that if terrorism and loadshedding are controlled, the country would progress economically. He said that people have given 2-3rd seats of national assembly in Punjab to PML-N and a thumping majority in Punjab. He said that those people are demanding local bodies elections on party basis who never held local bodies elections on party or non-party basis throughout their history. Replying to a question he expressed the hope that Pakistan would be put on the road to progress during next two and a half years.
